History of Ang Mo Kio
Ang Mo Kio is a town located in the northeastern part of Singapore. Its name, “Ang Mo Kio,” is derived from the Hokkien dialect, which refers to a bridge called “Ang Mo Kio” in the area. The bridge was built across Sungei Tongkang (now known as Sungei Kallang) during the early days of Singapore’s development.
Historically, Ang Mo Kio was a rural area primarily inhabited by plantations and farms in the early 20th century. It started to undergo significant transformation in the 1970s when the Housing and Development Board (HDB), Singapore’s public housing authority, developed the area into a modern residential town.
The development of Ang Mo Kio New Town began in 1973, and it was one of the first new towns to be planned and built under Singapore’s urban renewal program. The town was designed to accommodate the growing population and provide affordable housing for Singaporeans. It quickly became a vibrant and self-contained residential estate.
The town’s infrastructure and amenities were gradually developed over the years. Ang Mo Kio Town Centre, located at Ang Mo Kio Avenue 8, became a bustling hub with a variety of retail shops, markets, hawker centers, and other commercial establishments. The iconic Ang Mo Kio Public Library, one of the largest libraries in Singapore, was also built in the town center.
Ang Mo Kio is known for its well-designed public housing estates, featuring high-rise apartment blocks and low-rise housing complexes. These HDB flats cater to various income groups, providing affordable and quality housing options for residents.
In addition to residential areas, Ang Mo Kio has several green spaces and parks. Ang Mo Kio Town Garden West and Ang Mo Kio Town Garden East are popular recreational spots where residents can enjoy outdoor activities and relax amidst lush greenery.
Transportation infrastructure has also been a focus in Ang Mo Kio. The town is well-connected to other parts of Singapore through major roads and expressways. Ang Mo Kio MRT Station, an underground Mass Rapid Transit (MRT) station on the North-South Line, provides convenient access to public transportation.
Over the years, Ang Mo Kio has continued to develop and evolve. It has become a mature town with a mix of residential, commercial, and recreational amenities. Today, it remains a vibrant and popular residential area, offering a quality living environment for its residents.
